Second award for social enterprise fund

Legal & General and CAF’s joint venture www.se-assist.co.uk scoops a second award for Community Investment at the National CSR Awards on Friday, 6 March held at Mercedes Benz World in Surrey.

The awards were judged by leading responsible businesses such as:

  • Liz Jones Editor of Ethical Performance Magazine
  • Tony Juniper Campaigner, writer, sustainability adviser
  • Bruce Poon Tip Founder of G Adventure, Corporate & social environmentalist
  • Camila Batmanghelidjh, CBE Founder of Kids Company
  • James Cameron Chairman of Climate Change Capital

This second awards builds upon winning the Investment Week – Best New Project at their sustainable business Awards 2014.

Our Social Enterprise Assist fund provides interest free loans and Legal & General mentors for social enterprises in Sussex and Croydon and is planning to be in Wales and Birmingham in 2015. It has currently created 64 jobs in these two regions and has a number of exciting social enterprises in our portfolio including:

Croydon Citizen

Croydon Citizen are a citizen-led, not-for-profit community newspaper that provides a platform for ordinary Croydon people (not professional journalists) to air views, investigate issues and hold local officials accountable – both online and in a print format that reaches people who might not be online.

Mum’s The Chef

Mum’s The Chef provide training and employment opportunities for long term unemployed ethnic minority women, who lack work experience and qualifications and have helped over forty women to date. They are trained in Food Preparation and Cooking up to NVQ1 and Professional Cookery up to NVQ 2 level whilst the social enterprise delivers catering to corporate, and consumer clients.

The Bevendean Community Foundation

‘The Bevy’ is the first co-operative pub on a housing estate in the UK. More than just a pub, it is a community hub with a wide range of activities in an area where there is nowhere decent to meet, eat or drink.

Shika

Shika run a sustainable fashion label producing African inspired clothing for the socially aware customer. They provide employment and educational opportunities and on the job training to people in the UK and Tanzania.

The Grace Eyre Foundation

The Purple Playhouse, is a theatre for use by the local community with the aim to promote and support marginalised arts and drama within learning disability communities.

The Ecological Land Co-operative (ELC)

ELC provides affordable sites for ecological land based livelihoods in the UK. The sites are for new entrants who would otherwise not be able to access land.

Engage and Create

Engage and create offer cognitive stimulation sessions for people living with dementia whilst enabling staff to deliver effective person centred care by providing training and consultancy. Through this they improve quality of life for people with dementia and increase the skills of their carers.

Parentskool

Parentskool is a Brighton-based social enterprise which offers antenatal classes and other support services for first time parents-to-be.

Their mission is to provide realistic, fun and confidence-building courses, and other products and services, which support their vision to inform and prepare parents-to-be, resulting in more confident, healthier and happier parents and babies.

Sussex Community Internet Project

SCIP provide low cost, high quality ethical IT services. Integrating Hardware, Software, IT support, Web Design, Databases, Training, Hosting, Consultancy and Advice. SCIP’s clients are primarily charities, voluntary, community organisations and other not-for-profit groups. They also welcome enquiries from companies who are looking for an ethical, high quality IT supplier.

hiSbe (How it should be)

hiSbe is a new type of supermarket that’s standing up for “how it Should be”. hiSbe thinks supermarkets should be doing business in a more responsible way. Their purpose is to help make the food industry more fair and sustainable.
