LEGAL & GENERAL ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP WITH LEADING MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY RETHINK.
04 February 2013
The new partnership allows Legal & General to offer an enhanced package of support for employees experiencing mental health problems as Legal & General customers can now benefit from Rethink Mental Illness's vast experience in the field of mental health. This means that Legal & General clients with Group Protection insurance will have access to the charity's information and resources on a wide range of mental health problems. The charity can also provide training on management tools that can be used to support staff and reduce the chances of them needing time off for stress, anxiety and depression.
Mental health disorders are increasingly common in Britain, with the Office for National Statistics estimating that one in six adults will have a 'significant' mental health problem each year, while between 8 and 12 per cent of the population experience depression in any year.
14 million work days were lost in 2011in the UK due to mental health conditions highlighting just how important it is to tackle this issue both for companies and employees. With the specialist support Legal & General provides, with the help of partners like Rethink Mental Illness and our system of early intervention, we are able to help individuals get healthy so they are able to return to work as soon as possible.
Commenting on the new partnership, Jim Islam, Managing Director of Legal & General Group Protection, said:
"I am delighted that we have been able to announce this new partnership with Rethink Mental Illness. They carry out excellent work in offering support and advice to those affected by mental health problems as well as their families, friends and colleagues.
"The partnership allows us here at Legal & General to offer an even more complete package to help employers get employees back to work as quickly as possible as well as providing greater support to their staff.
"The number of people affected by mental health conditions is worryingly on the rise, with issues like stress and depression experienced by millions across the UK. Mental health problems are estimated to cost England over £77 billion a year and so everything that can be done must be done to tackle this issue.
"As issues like stress often start in the workplace, it is vital that businesses have support in place not only to help employees receive the assistance they need, but also to spot conditions developing early so they can be prevented and the employee can remain in work."
Paul Jenkins, CEO of Rethink Mental Illness said:
"This partnership will give us the opportunity to create better understanding of mental health amongst employers and teach them practical ways in which they can support their staff to stay well. Creating a working environment in which mental health is a top priority is good for both the individual and their employers."
