Legal & General stress the importance of employer support to manage Sickness Absence.
25 February 2011
The number of employees interviewed in the Labour Force Survey and who had taken at least one day off sick had risen to 2.5% by the last quarter of 2010. This is back to pre-recession levels. In the first quarter of 2009, at the height of the economic crisis the number fell to 2.1%.
There are differences between men and women in the reason for being off work with men suffering more with musculoskeletal problems whereas the main reason given for women was stress and anxiety. Legal & General experience supports this analysis. 44% of all Group Income Protection claims are female and of the anxiety and depression claims 54% of them are female, which is higher than average whereas of the musculosketal only 30% of the claims are female which is lower than average.
"This new data continues to highlight the importance of employers in all parts of the economy helping their staff with good quality support. We have been highlighting the ways in which Group Income Protection can help employers to manage absence and the positive contribution that tailored support can make to rehabilitation in the workplace,” said Diane Buckley, Legal & General Managing Director, Group Protection.
