Legal & General supports Government's announcement on new mental health treatment approach
31 January 2011
Diane Buckley, Managing Director of Legal & General's Group Protection business said, 'I'm pleased to see the government recognising the impact mental health conditions can have on individuals and society. The introduction of these new approaches to dealing with mental health are similar to those already being used successfully in the private sector.
At Legal & General, we've seen a marked improvement in return to work rates for individuals with stress through early intervention and access to treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). The number of individuals we help to return to work within a year of being off with a mental illness has almost doubled in the last five years. The prime reason we're so successful is the return to work focus that's included as part of the therapy we provide and the fact that the sessions are tailored to the individual.
This works well for the employees who return to work more quickly as well as for the employers who retain their staff. It also reduces costs for the state by helping to reduce pressures on the NHS and the welfare state."
