We continue to monitor health and safety performance via local committees, which report into the Group health and safety committee. The local health and safety committees meet regularly and represent a cross section of departments and also encourage staff to participate and raise awareness across the business. The health and safety committees also include representation from Unite.

US work related incidents

As a life insurance company, we are exempt from regulatory reporting unless there was a fatality, in-patient hospitalization, amputation, or loss of an eye. We did not have any reportable instances in 2017.

LGA does not have a Parental Leave policy (maternity or paternity). All employees are covered under the Federal FMAL policy. Females on maternity leave would be paid a portion of salary under our short term disability program, used in conjunction with sick leave while they are medically disabled. Once no longer medically disabled, they can use personal, floating holiday or vacation leave thereafter or take the remaining time off without pay. Males on paternity leave can use personal, floating holiday or vacation leave or take the time off without pay.

  • 2017 - Number of employees used FMLA (maternity or paternity leave)
  • 9 Maternity
  • All returned to work at the end of the leave
  • One (1) termed within 12 months
  • 2 Paternity
  • All returned to work at the end of the leave

US absenteeism

Employees are protected by both federal and state leave laws. Through these laws, employees may take leave for their own illness (FMLA - Family Medical Leave Act) or the illness of a family member (state leave laws).

FMLA (federal leave law) - FMLA provides eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in a rolling 12-month period. They may use any accrued leave that they have available for this time.

State and local leave laws - State and local leave laws are usually similar to FMLA for protected leave, although the timeframe and use of accrued time may vary. For example, the Maryland Flexible Leave Act does not limit an employee to a maximum timeframe, however it does require that the employee use their accrued time that has been earned. Other states enacted laws that include paid leave to be used for safe time related to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or care for a child if school or place of care is closed by a public health official. In all of these laws, an employer may not discharge, demote or discipline an employee for exercising their rights under the law.

LGA has an independent outside company, UNUM, who manages all requests for protected leave. UNUM reviews all requests for protected leave, while confirming compliance with federal and applicable state leave laws.

Managers are responsible for maintaining employee attendance for their direct staff. If the employee's absenteeism rate exceeds 3%, not including protected leave, the manager is responsible for taking appropriate disciplinary actions.

Employee union membership

UK employee union membership 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017
Percentage of UK Employees who are members of Unite 33.8% 28.8% 39.6% 36.7% 38.4%

Unite collectively represents grades 1-5 (up to LGIM grade 4) and has membership of 38.4% within this group. Across all employees and all grades, Unite has a total membership of 33.4%. Unite has been maintained or grown membership across the whole of the UK during 2017, with significant growth in Birmingham and a uptake of membership within our London office. Unite will be looking at opportunities for new areas of growth outside of the core locations during 2018/2019 including Solihull and Barnsley.of Suffolk Life to Curtis Banks. However, recruitment in the remaining areas of union recognition remains strong and Unite will continue to engage with the company regarding further areas of expansion. Unions in US do not apply.

US does not operate in a union or collective bargaining environment. We do comply with the Federal WARN Act (The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act).
The Federal WARN Action offers protection to employees (and families) by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of covered plant closing and covered mass layoffs. The notice be given to affected workers or their representatives (union environments); to the appropriate state dislocated worker unit and the appropriate unit of local government.
Mass layoff defined – A covered employer must give notice if there is to be a mass layoff which does not result from a plant closing, but which will result in an employment loss at the employment site during any 30-day period for 500 or more employees, or for 50-499 employees if they make up at least 33% of the employer’s active workforce.
