Legal & General support Hospice UK’s ambition to Open Up hospice care: One year on

Legal & General is a founding partner of Hospice UK’s Open Up Hospice Care campaign which seeks to raise awareness and understanding of the work carried out by hospices and improve access to end of life care.

Legal & General have been hosting events at their offices, some of which already have strong links with their local hospice, to make sure that employees know where to turn, as well as providing financial support.

Why do we need to Open Up Hospice Care?

Even at the end of our lives, we have hopes and aspirations. We want to be where we feel comfortable, do what brings us joy and have those we love by our side. We want to be, despite everything, ourselves. The chances are we all know someone who needs hospice care. It could be a colleague, a friend, a neighbour or someone in our own family.

Hospices care for more than 200,000 people living with any terminal illness every year. Young and old, irrespective of faith, ethnicity and gender, hospices are there for them. However, the major issue we face is that not everyone who needs expert end of life care is getting it. That’s more than 100,000 people every year who are missing out. These people are often the same people that are discriminated against in other parts of life. For example; LGBT people, carers and people from a BAME community. Many people don’t know about the help available, and others are fearful of what hospice care is.

Without action, this inequality will only increase as demand is rapidly increasing as our population ages. With that in mind our one big ambition is to Open Up hospice care, so that every person that needs hospice care, gets hospice care. In July 2017 we launched our national campaign Open Up, made possible with the support of Legal & General, to achieve our big ambition.

A year on: what have we achieved since we launched this campaign?

We need people to know that hospice care is for them. Our campaign reached 1.1 million people with features in newspapers and on TV. There are still many more people we need to reach.

We are also making changes to how people can access care. The first step was to understand who is not receiving hospice care and help local hospices to better understand the needs of their whole community. This way, we are able to plan for the future and adapt services to meet the different need in different areas across the UK.

At the same time, by working with other voluntary bodies, we have been able to make strides in widening access to end of life support to homeless people, the Gypsy and Traveller community and LGBT people. Our joint projects will identify and share best-in-class examples of how to widen access and adapt styles of care to suit the person in need. This will help hospices focus scarce resources and meet the needs of the 100,000 people who need support at the end of their lives.
