Legal & General help fund early-stage mental health intervention for charity Place2Be
Legal & General have helped provide funds to mental-health charity Place2Be so that they can continue to help support early-stage mental health interventions in primary schools. One-to-one mental health support from counsellors could both improve life chances for children and generate significant economic benefits.
An independent analysis conducted by charity Pro Bono Economics, of charity Place2Be’s school-based mental health services, looked at the improvement in mental health of pupils from over 250 primary schools, covering 4,500 children who had received one-to-one support from Place2Be counsellors over the school year.
For every £1 invested (£4.2 million in total), Place2Be’s counselling service has the potential to deliver a societal return of £6.20 (£25.9 million in total) by improving long-term outcomes for each child. This is achieved through higher rates of employment and earnings. By reducing rates of school truancy, exclusion, smoking, depression and crime, the potential benefit of Place2Be’s counselling service was calculated at £5,700 per child.
Speaking in the offices at Place2Be, Legal & General Group CEO Nigel Wilson said: “Legal & General are proud funders of the Place2Be research into the social return achieved through early intervention in schools. We have expertise in rehabilitation and providing psychological intervention for our Group Income Protection claimants suffering with mental illness. Over the last 10 years we’ve received over 11,000 notifications under our Group Income Protection policies for individuals suffering from mental illness and with early intervention and support helped 4,830 of them return to work.”
Legal & General have gained this experience by developing early intervention and proactive claims management programmes to their Group Income Protection (GIP) business as mental health issues are the number one cause of claim in this area since 1999.
As a leading employer, Legal & General are committed to reducing the stigma associated with mental health - by encouraging colleagues to discuss their issues and promote active listening to create an environment of mutual support within the company. Training is supplied for employees to help spot and deal with signs of mental distress and have over 60 mental health first aiders across the business.
Nigel concluded by highlighting the importance of identifying signs early in development: “Mental health doesn’t discriminate by gender, age or social background. Good mental health plays a major part on children’s lives and on their long term prospects for health and prosperity for they are our future workforce and leaders of tomorrow. It is essential that we find ways to help identify problems early on - the findings of this research highlight the importance of early intervention to help address mental health issues as soon as they arise and so reduce the potential for negative impact later on in life.”
