Overview

Legal & General's Environmental Policy sets out our strategy to manage the direct and indirect environmental impacts arising from our business operations. The substance of this policy remained unchanged during 2005, but the policy has been subject to review by the Group Environmental Policy Committee during 2006.

Legal & General Group Environmental Policy

Legal & General recognises that its business activities result in both direct and indirect environmental impacts. We also recognise that our responsibilities extend beyond shareholders, customers and employees to the wider community and include responsible environmental management. We are therefore committed as a company to managing our business with the aim of reducing our direct and indirect environmental impacts and believe this is an important step towards increasing the sustainability of our business in the long term.

It is our Group policy to:

  • Deliver continual improvement in our environmental performance through the adoption of appropriate best practices and the prevention of pollution as a result of our operations
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and the other Codes of Practice and Agreements to which we subscribe
  • Understand and manage the direct environmental impacts associated with the management of our operational and investment properties including those arising from emissions of greenhouse gases, waste management, use of ozone depleting substances, resource use efficiency, water consumption and land management
  • Understand and exert influence on the indirect environmental impacts which result from our investment decisions and from our procurement of of goods and services
  • Work with our key stakeholders including shareholders, customers, employees, intermediaries and local communities to manage these environmental impacts as appropriate
  • Participate in external environmental initiatives to benefit both Legal & General and our stakeholders

Organisation, Scope and Other Requirements

  • Responsibility for environmental management will rest with the Resources & International Director, who will report progress directly to myself.
  • This policy applies to all activities of Legal & General Group Plc
  • Legal & General will maintain objectives and targets for improvement based on our identified environmental impacts
  • Legal & General will maintain appropriate management systems to achieve our environmental goals, including monitoring and audit functions
  • Legal & General will strive for participation from all employees
  • Legal & General will communicate, by a public annual report, its environmental performance
