'Making a Difference' in 2005

It's important to us to recognise employees who devote their own time to environmental issues or activities. It's for this reason that one of the most significant developments in 2005 was the introduction of our 'Making a Difference' (MAD) Awards scheme, designed to reward employees who show outstanding commitment to the environment.

The Green Awards, precursor to the MAD Awards, had reached their fifth year and this gave us the opportunity to review how we recognise 'green' employees, and in particular to consider how commitment could be rewarded on a more regular and spontaneous basis throughout the year. Following this review, the MAD Awards were launched in mid-2005. Nominations can now be received at any time of year by the local Environment Committees. The winners received an award of bonus bonds and a MAD 'bug'.

Our first MAD Awards ceremony was held at the end of year to celebrate the activities and achievements of each location committee, as well as to make a special award, to one overall winner from each location, of £1,000 to their chosen charities. Feedback from the new initiative was extremely positive and we're proud of the environmental commitment of so many of our staff. This year, in an exciting new development, we're expanding the MAD Awards to encompass community and charity work too!

Making a difference awards 2005

"The new 'MAD' Awards really engaged employees in 2005. Employees and committees were delighted to be giving out awards throughout the year, choosing and introducing their overall winner and sharing their successes with peers and senior management through the on-the-day presentations."

David Valentine and Steve Wallace were London's worthy 'MAD' Award winners, as a result of their initiative to offer clients the choice of receiving transaction statements via email attachment rather than in printed format. This is estimated to have saved over two million sheets of paper since 2002, excluding envelopes and postage, and is a great example of an initiative which has enhanced customer service and benefited the environment as well!

David and Steve chose St. Michael's Hospice in Hampshire and Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice as the beneficiaries of their award.
